It often feels like all of the film and video industry innovation these days is 100% with AI or in the cloud. We often forget that filmmaking itself is a craft of innovation. Every camera, light, and rig was dreamed up by some creative trying to solve a simple problem.
So, it’s nice to see a company develop practical. non-AI solutions to real-world filmmaking problems. In this case, we have to tip our hats to the team at Kondor Blue for their new Firefly D-Tap Light.
Designed to assist shooters and production crews who would otherwise be forced to fumble around in dark environments with their cameras and gear, the Firefly turns any D-Tap Battery into a flashlight.
Here’s what you need to know about this new tool and why it might become essential for production.
The Kondor Blue Firefly D-Tap Battery Light
As any DP can tell you, most of the biggest problems in filmmaking often come down to lighting—and specifically, finding more of it. This new Firefly D-Tap Battery Light aims to solve usability issues for camera crews working in low light or pitch-black production settings.
Yes, you could use the light on your smartphone (or, better yet, an actual flashlight), but that still requires a free hand and lost time.
With the Firefly D-Tap Battery, crews can quickly and easily get the light they need to configure a camera or adjust small settings.
The standard Firefly D-Tap Light is lightweight and flexible, making it a discreet lighting solution. The 90 CRI LED work light on the Firefly produces a cool, 6000K white light under a diffusion dome. When used above 50% brightness, the Firefly's light is flicker-free.
There's also a red-light stealth mode for situations when the light needs to be as non-intrusive as possible.
Kondor Blue will also make a pro version of the Firefly available in 2025. This improves upon the standard version with a 96+ CRI Color Accurate Eye Light and gives you the ability to choose a warmer 3200K white and more daylight-like 5500K white.
The pro version retains the red light mode from the standard, but also adds a blue light mode and a blacklight mode.
Firefly features include:
Flexible gooseneck that holds position once set
Ultra-lightweight and minimal footprint to put in any camera bag
Multiple brightness settings with a red light option to be more discrete on dark sets
Reverse polarity protection
The standard Firefly light is available now for $34.99 while the pro version will start shipping in 2025 at $55.99. Both versions of the Firefly D-Tap Battery are available in 12-inch and 18-inch sizes.
