As any Leica shooter will surely tell you, there’s something special about Leica cameras. Founded in 1869 by Ernst Leitz in Wetzlar, Germany, the Leica brand has been synonymous with high-end photography for well over a century.

But what if we told you that the iPhone in your pocket could harness the aesthetic powers of Leica with an easy-to-use app in conjunction with a new grip? That’s the promise behind Leica’s new Lux Grip in tandem with the camera maker’s iPhone app.

Let’s take a look at the new Leica Lux Grip and how it can be used with the Leica Lux app to help you turn your iPhone into a fully functional Leica camera complete with iconic film simulation modes and a true-to-form Leica feeling.

Leica Lux App

Initially released in 2024, Leica Lux is an iPhone camera app available via the Apple App Store. The app comes loaded with 11 color profiles, which Leica calls “Leica Looks. " These profiles are tailored to match the unique aesthetics and looks of current and classic Leica cameras.

The Leica Lux app can also be used in a fully automatic mode, just like the normal built-in camera app on iPhones. It will also include an aperture mode to help users mimic the bokeh and style of the expensive lenses used in Leica cameras.

The Leica Lux app also offers a free mode, where users can access a limited number of Leica Looks and lens imitations. To unlock all the looks, profiles, and features, users must sign up for a monthly or yearly subscription, which you can explore here.

Leica Lux Grip

Just announced as an add-on for Leica Lux app users, the company has unveiled a new iPhone accessory designed to make your smartphone feel more like you’re using a dedicated Leica camera.

The Lux Grip is meant to mirror the feeling of a DSLR or mirrorless style grip and will further equip your iPhone with customizable function buttons, a two-stage shutter control, and a control dial to help fully immerse shooters into the traditional photography style.

The Leica Lux Grip's 300mAh battery should power up to 1,000 shots. According to the company, it can be recharged via USB-C in around two hours. The Leica Lux Grip will retail for $329 and can be found on Leica’s website here.
