How the Canon EOS R50 V Pocket Cine Cam Could Redefine Digital Cameras
This could be one of the most important camera announcements in the last few years.

As one of the flagship cameras for Canon’s newly announced V Series, the EOS R50 V could, perhaps sneakily, become one of the most important new camera announcements of the past few years.
This Canon EOS R50 V builds a bridge where there has not been one before. On one side of the bridge, you can find the highly affordable yet often not super cinematic prosumer cameras for content creators that usually cost around $1,000 or below.
On the other end of the bridge are the higher-quality mirrorless cameras and higher-end cinema cameras, which offer plenty of cinema-focused specs and features yet often cost at least $3,000 and up.
With the EOS R50 V, Canon is attempting to create a nearly fully functional cinema-capable mirrorless camera in a very compact package that costs about as much as the new iPhone 16E.

What You Need to Know About the Canon EOS R50 V
With a tagline of “made for video, built for creators,” Canon has clearly defined its target audience with this new camera. The EOS R50 V is a compact interchangeable lens camera for creators and vloggers that offers both cinema-level and creator-level specs and features.
On the cinema side, the EOS R50 V can record high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60fps, whereas on the creator side, it also features a vertical tripod mounting point, a front record button for selfie footage, and other prosumer-level perks.
The camera has a sleek, brick-like body that’s been redesigned to elevate video content production and clearly indicates that it’s attempting to be the best of both worlds.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC X Processing
Canon pairs the EOS R50 V with a powerful 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and a DIGIC X image processor to empower the camera to deliver high-resolution imagery and striking and accurate colors.
The EOS R50 V should work well in various lighting conditions and offers a flexible ISO 100-32000 range that is expandable to ISO 51200. Plus, with the full width of the sensor engaged, the R50 V will be able to record 6K oversampled UHD 4K 30p video and support Full HD 1080 120p for slow-motion playback.
Shooters can also record high-speed bursts and high-resolution 4K video, as the DIGIC X image processor's silent electronic shutter can support up to 15 fps of continuous shooting.

Advanced Video Features
The EOS R50 V will also feature many advanced video features usually only available in the Canon Cinema EOS line, including Canon Log 3, HLG, PQ, 709 Recording, False Color, and Zebras.
From a video professional standpoint, the R50 V will also utilize four different built-in live streaming modes and support four-channel audio recording with an external microphone.
The only major non-cinema level feature the EOS R50 V lacks might be dual SD card slots. But if you’re using a high-quality SD card like the OWC Atlas Ultra, you's be in good hands with options up to 512GB.
Price and Specs
All told, the R50 V is stacking up to be a quite capable cinema-esque camera.
However, the kicker is the price. Set to retail at a starting price of just $650, the EOS R50 V will put the rest of the camera industry on notice as it will immediately lower the cost of entry into cinema-level production by a significant margin. The only thing close at this price point would be Fujifilm's X-M5 which is around $150 more expensive.
Here are the specs and purchase price of the Canon EOS R50 V if you're interested in trying it out yourself.
