While many of us might subscribe to the “just go out and shoot” mentality when pursuing a career in photography or videography, there’s something to be said about using resources (especially free ones) that can help teach you a thing or two about actually building a career in these industries.

In that vein, it’s exciting to see the Canon Student Professional Services (CPS) program launch. This free membership initiative by Canon aims to support and mentor student photographers and videographers as they launch their careers.

Let’s take a look at this CPS program and some of its additional benefits, which include free camera maintenance, a discount on repairs, and expedited shipping for interested Canon shooters.

Who is the Canon Professional Services Program For?

The new CPS program is aimed at providing many benefits to students looking to level up their skills and make a smoother transition from their film and photo schools into the professional world. The program is only available for qualified students aged 18 and above who can provide proof of enrollment.

"This membership program not only supports students in their higher education interests and pursuits, but also opens doors to opportunities that may have otherwise seemed out of reach," says Jason Fligman, Senior Vice President of Service Strategy & Support at Canon U.S.A. "By providing this level of access, at no cost, through our new Student CPS program, Canon is helping to inspire and proactively shape the future of the imaging field."

The program will offer a variety of support services that would usually only be reserved for full-time professionals, including expedited repairs, discounts on services, and even a dedicated support hotline for students looking for help with specific camera issues.

Benefits of the Program

The overall goal of the program is simply to help students learn more about their Canon cameras and gear and develop the skills to better maintain their gear without all of the typical pitfalls one might experience when learning these skills independently.

Here’s a full list of the CPS program benefits:

  • Exclusive purchase offers through the Canon Online Store

  • Free Canon Maintenance Service for up to two products per year

  • 10% discount on repairs for up to two products per year

  • Expedited service within 3-5 business days

  • Free return shipping for items sent to Canon’s service facilities

Students can also access a “Photography Mentorship” hotline, connecting them directly with industry professionals to discuss camera and gear questions. If you want to learn more about this CPS program or possibly apply yourself, you can check it out on Canon’s site here.
