The new URSA Cine Immersive is a technical beast capable of capturing extremely high-resolution video for use on Apple's Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.

Originally unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference early this year, Blackmagic Design has strongly signaled that it is set to go all-in on immersive video. The popular digital cinema company has released more details about its new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera, a staggeringly powerful cinema camera designed to produce high-end Apple Immersive Video for Apple's Vision Pro mixed-reality headset .

On top of that, Blackmagic has also announced that DaVinci Resolve Studio will be updated to support editing the same Apple Immersive Video early next year. So, if you’re interested in possibly exploring this exciting new medium of immersive content, which is set to be powered by two of the biggest brands in video capture and content, here’s what you need to know.

A Look at the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive Camera

Let’s first look at the new Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera. Based on Blackmagic’s popular new URSA Cine line, this immersive version features a fixed, custom lens system pre-installed on the body. It has been specifically designed to capture the Apple Immersive Video format for display on the mixed-reality Apple Vision Pro headset.

The URSA Cine Immersive is certainly a beast itself, too. Its sensor delivers 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye with pixel-level synchronization and an impressive 16 stops of dynamic range, which is needed for shooters to record 90fps 3D immersive cinema content to a single file.

This custom lens system has also been designed for URSA Cine’s large-format image sensor, which has extremely accurate positional data that are read and stored during manufacturing. The immersive lens projection data is calibrated and stored on the device before it travels through post-production and into the Blackmagic RAW files.

Resolve Prepares for Apple Immersive Video

The other big news here is that Blackmagic has announced that the company plans to roll out a new version of DaVinci Resolve Studio, which is set to help filmmakers and video professionals of all types edit, color grade, and produce Apple Immersive Video shot on this new URSA Cine Immersive camera for Apple Vision Pro.

Some of the key features of this new Resolve Studio update include an immersive video viewer. This viewer lets users pan, tilt, and roll clips to view them on 2D monitors or Apple Vision Pro, allowing them to more fully “immerse” themselves in the editing experience.

Blackmagic has also shared that transitions rendered by Apple Vision Pro can be bypassed using FCP XML metadata, giving editors access to clean master files. Export presets will also enable quick output into a package that can be viewed directly on Apple Vision Pro.
