One of our most beloved product families here at OWC—both internally and externally—is the Jellyfish line. Jellyfish storage solutions are purpose built for collaborative video work and honestly, there’s nothing quite like them on the market.

Sure, there are other network attached storage (NAS) and server solutions out there, but none of those combine the networking speed, storage performance, security, and ease of setup that Jellyfish are designed to deliver. Jellyfish is simply the best option available for video teams and production houses.

The Jellyfish lineup also has something for everyone. There are rack mounted solutions, semi-portable solutions that are easy to transport but primarily meant to be in one place for medium-to-long periods of time. But there’s also the Jellyfish Nomad, which is designed to deliver the full Jellyfish experience for teams that are on the go. Jellyfish Nomad offers NVMe SSD storage in capacities up to 64TB with 6000 MB/s sustained Read/Write speeds and 128GB of RAM. That means the Nomad can handle RAW files, multicamera projects, image sequences, and VR without breaking a sweat.

Recently, Jellyfish Nomad was put under the ultimate stress test by one of our customers, Butcher Bird Studios, an incredibly creative and cutting edge production studio that partners with some of the world’s biggest brands to tell their stories.

The folks at Butcher Bird move around a lot. They seek to tell cinematic stories for their clients in interesting environments and high-tech studio stages. So, when the team set out for a quick-turn field project for aerial robotics company Red Cat, they knew the perfect companion would be the Jellyfish Nomad. Butcher Bird documented their time with the Nomad in the video above, and as you can see, not only was Nomad easy to transport, fitting an airplane overhead compartment with ease, it also stood up to the extreme desert environment of the Utah salt flats with aplomb.

The entire Butcher Bird team was able to process and collaborate on video coming from cinema cameras, drones, gimbal, and iPhone rigs, allowing them to establish an on-site, no-compromise editorial department in a matter of minutes. And, as Butcher Bird notes, Jellyfish Nomad’s ability to give six editors 10Gb access to all of a project’s assets gives them the ability to deliver a show even while they’re in the process of shooting it.
