Media Source
Under the player you can locate the source metadata that Kyno brings in with every file as long as the metadata is present, Kyno will be able to read it. The data present will be file name, size, modified, created, recorded, encoder, file format, duration, total bitrate, timecode, video, and audio.
Next to the file name, a magnifying glass is present, by clicking the magnifying glass this allows the user to reveal the file in the finder. This is very helpful when you are looking through a multi-terabyte OWC Jellyfish and you need to know exactly where the file lives.
Source Media Cogwheel Menu
The cogwheel menu is a clip context menu that allows the user to do the following.
- Open with Player
- Open with > (depending on the clip you can open it with other RAW players)
- Reveal in Finder
- Move to Trash ( This deletes the file from your server)
- Rename
- Copy
- Sent to > Non-linear editor of choice or Frame.io & Archiware P5
- Export Sub clips
- Export Markers as Stills
- Export Metadata
- Import Metadata
- Paste Metadata
The remaining options can be enabled by going to Preferences under the advanced tab and selecting Activate Debug Mode
- Show Cache Directory in Finder
- Show Descriptive Metadata File in Finder
- Show Debug Information
- Clear Cache
Open with Player
This option allows the user to open a single media file or multiple files in a pop-up player that can be dragged over to a secondary monitor for review while using Kyno to look at other media.
Open with
The Open With menu can be utilized for video files such as BRAW. Although Kyno has the ability to playback Blackmagic RAW, they have given the user the option to open the video file with BRAW Player.
Reveal in Finder
There are various ways to reveal a file in the finder and you can do it through the cogwheel menu as well as by clicking on the magnifying glass next to the name of the file.
Shortcut: You can hold down Command +Shift +R to Reveal in Finder
Move to Trash
NOTE: Proceed with extreme caution if you would like to move a piece of media to the trash, as this cannot be undone. Kyno provides a prompt that will have you confirm before deleting a video file from your OWC Jellyfish Server.
Rename
Renaming a file or a batch rename of multiple files before going into an edit can help distinguish one project from another, especially when most cameras have a generic alphanumeric format that can sometimes conflict in post-production when relinking media for older projects.
Note: When renaming a file, one should always communicate and follow the universal language that his/her workgroup has come up with. It’s always a good idea to rename in the pre-edit stage rather than doing it midway through a project. This can cause confusion with missing files that were renamed and complicate proxy-to-original workflows.
The rename option will give you the ability to rename a file, affecting it permanently.
Copy
Command + C or Ctrl +C will copy the metadata of that selected clip so you can use it to populate other clips that may be of the same action.
Send To
You can send selected clips from the icon view, from the list view, or from the detail view to Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer by choosing Send To - (pick your NLE of choice)
Adobe Premiere Pro... from the context menus or by pressing Cmd-Shift-P (Mac) / Control-Shift-P (Win).
Final Cut Pro X... from the cogwheel menus or by pressing Cmd-Shift-F (Mac) / Control-Shift-F (Win)
DaVinci Resolve.. from the cogwheel menus or by pressing Cmd-Shift-D (Mac) / Control-Shift-D (Win)
Submitting this dialog will import the clips including metadata, see this article on how metadata gets translated exactly. Note that while Premiere Pro will automatically be started when submitting the dialog, it won't pick up the clip import once started. In order for this to work, Premiere Pro must be already running.
Options
Bins
- None: Creates no bins in Premiere Pro and imports clips to the top level
- From folders: Creates a bin structure that matches the folder structure that your files are in. You can select the level up to which you'd like to mirror that structure (i.e. first parent folder, second parent folder etc.)
- Specify: Creates a bin with a specific name
Sub clips
- Export as markers: Creates markers with duration in Premiere Pro from the sub clips you've defined in Kyno
- Create sub clips in project: Creates sub clips that are listed in your project bins and can be dragged onto the timeline (equivalent to Make Sub clip... in Premiere Pro)
XMP
- Update/write XMP metadata: Sets XMP metadata on the exported clips, by either writing to the clip itself or adding an XMP sidecar file. This is a necessary step to transfer all Kyno metadata to Premiere Pro. Without this the following metadata fields will not be transferred to Premiere: Rating, Tags, Camera Angle
Open With
Select the version of Premiere Pro you wish to send to. If there's only one version installed the dropdown is disabled
The respective option is only available if you have the editing software installed on your computer.
We will go over sending to specific NLE’s in a later section of this guide.
Export Sub clips
You can export sub clips from the cogwheel menu from a variety of mezzanine formats and deliverable codecs. The settings menu will be the exact same as the Export & Transcode Sub clips menu with the option to get granular on the video, audio settings.
Export Markers As Stills
Like sub clips you can export any markers you’ve set on a specific piece of media as a still.
Exporting markers as stills can be achieved by selecting the option from the cogwheel and following the setting specific adjustments that meet your deliverable needs.
This tool is a powerful one especially when shooting in 4K,6K, 8K and marketing, communications or publicist within your team or outside your organization need stills from a video. You can use this to give them options by setting markers on the media that you find to represent the video well and exporting high quality stills in JPEG or PNG.
Export Metadata
Exporting metadata in Kyno can be accessed through the cogwheel menu or by selecting the assets you want to export metadata for and on your keyboard press Cmd - Shift - X (Mac) or Control -Shift- X (Windows) to export the metadata to an excel sheet.
You can also export metadata as Kyno XML, FCPX XML, FCP7 XML, or Avid Media Composer (ALE).
Exporting as Excel
You will get another contextual menu that you can specify if this is a shot list or Asset XML with the ability to pick and choose what you would like to incorporate.
Import Metadata
You can also import metadata from NLE’s and other sources such as Shot Notes X.
